Custom Design
Given the traditional connotations of design linked to the concept of industrialization and mass production, it is increasingly evident how the disciplines related to it are rethinking fields of application and strategies in light of the ever more frequent intersections between the analog and digital worlds.
One of the consequences of such infiltrations is the development of user experience related to the customization of processes and products, a customization that involves humans as bodies, places seen as geographies, innovation introduced by new technologies and Industry 4.0.
At the base is the need to respond to a less standardized market focused on the needs and desires of the individual. This is why design seems increasingly oriented towards the design of ad hoc, tailor-made solutions, leaving ample room for the logic of custom made.
What we are essentially asking is whether we are moving from mass production to mass customization. The examples are evident and range from design for vulnerable users to glocal design (which includes self-production) to bespoke design (a flagship of Made in Italy).
In light of what has been presented, the theme of custom design proposed for the third National SID Conference is an opportunity to define tools, methods, and relationships capable of capturing nuances related to the concepts of specialization, personalization, and uniqueness able to reinterpret the lexicons of contemporaneity.
It is declined
– in relation to humans
– in relation to technologies
– in relation to the territory
It is a value that belongs to our tradition of conscious designers.
Online contributions
All members are invited to contribute by submitting their “tailored” contribution (max 300 characters) on the website, interpreting the concept of tailored design today. The contributions published on the website will be presented and discussed at the conference.
Contributions from the venues
Each venue is invited to select a maximum of 3 contributions to present at the Conference to offer an overview of the current scenario and integrate the work produced with microstories and research mapping. Contributions may cover topics and activities carried out by the venues, research, etc. Interventions of a maximum of 7 minutes are requested, preferably by young research fellows, PhD students, adjunct professors, and/or researchers. In total, about 30 contributions are expected, distributed across 5 thematic tables over the two days of work.
