On the occasion of the 2026 Annual Conference, Design Doing/Design Making, SID invites the Italian and international academic community to explore the theme of design making, both as the creation of something tangible and as a transformative and emancipatory capability.
The contemporary context in which design operates is undergoing profound transformation. The state of permacrisis and vulnerability seems to become a constant condition, a structural expression of contemporaneity. In this context, spaces of necessity and possibility open up within which the project intervenes to investigate, interpret, and understand, but also to think, imagine, and develop new strategies, scenarios, and ecosystems of design making.
What values, sensitivities, practices, and clients have guided design processes in the past, what guides them in the contemporary world, and what might guide them in the future?
How can design become a tool for transformation towards more just, sustainable, and supportive futures? Designing for and with whom?
Through which approaches, methodologies, and interdisciplinary interactions does design become a tool for the production of knowledge and innovation?
