The next SID assembly will be held in Palermo in the early months of 2021, which in recent years has earned the reputation of a “city of hospitality” thanks to its strong Euro-Mediterranean identity and the implementation of policies and practices of integration and respect for new citizenships.
Today, Palermo presents itself as a multidisciplinary laboratory for experimentation on the themes of interculturality, connection, and social and cultural inclusion.
At the annual meeting and study opportunity on the scientific perspectives of the discipline, SID proposes to contribute by implementing the tools and methods of design to construct new visions and social and cultural spaces, for a profound reorganization of ways of life, production, and consumption, aimed at addressing the multiple lines of emerging crises at this moment, which can turn into opportunities for change.
A commitment in which design can express and relaunch its entire vocation as a “relational” and “connective” discipline in innovating methodological approaches, orientation and intervention tools, and design capacities and sensitivities.
A historical peculiarity of design is the circularity of the process that “connects” the progressive scientific systematization of the discipline and the experimental practices activated by the design’s project tension. Today, its articulated phenomenology shows the intensification of interaction between scientific and humanistic fields, between productions and the pursuit of the common good, between territorial actors and project experts, especially around the search for forms of systemic innovation that can address the complex environmental and social challenges.
“Design to connect” also proposes the ability to grasp and narrate the resources and specificities of that multidimensional palimpsest that is the territory, in its peculiar forms of “cultural landscape” where tangible and intangible qualities intertwine.
But the connective quality of design is mainly constituted by the centrality of people: attention to everyday life, opportunities and access to resources, the identity and capabilities of individuals and communities that fuel the “design hope” of a future not overshadowed by geographical, cultural, ideological boundaries.
Within this broad and evolving scenario, some themes of specific interest and relevance for the design scientific community can be identified to propose as the focus of the various contributions in constructing a detailed and plural state of the art of “design to connect.”

Starting from these premises, three thematic areas have been identified to investigate, which differently concern design research on the scientific and cultural level.
1. Connect / People
2. Connect / Heritage
3. Connect / Processes

To open a space for reflection on the present and future of design research, SID proposes to the entire scientific community a call for projects and research ideas that, regardless of the specific topics addressed, must be particularly relevant to one of the three thematic areas of scientific-cultural reference mentioned, in which they will converge. The SID Assembly will welcome the presentation of the projects and research ideas submitted and selected, structuring a program of interventions, introduced, coordinated, and moderated by experts invited to act as speakers and discussants.

CALL FOR PROJECTS AND RESEARCH IDEAS
In relation to the three scientific-cultural thematic areas indicated, SID proposes a call divided into two categories, projects (paper) and research ideas (poster), which will be selected in the first phase upon submission of:
1. Paper | Ongoing or completed research projects no more than two years old;
2. Poster | Unpublished research ideas, not yet submitted to other calls.

Participation Requirements
– The first category is open to all researchers, SID members and non-members, submitting the results of ongoing or completed research projects after January 2018.
– The second category is open to researchers under 40 (born after July 31, 1980) of different roles (fellows, doctoral candidates and doctors, research grant holders, RTDA and RTDB,…) SID members and non-members, presenting unpublished research ideas, not yet submitted to other calls; in the case of research groups, researchers older than 40 may be part of the group, but not as proposers.

Participation and Selection Methods
– The call will remain open until July 31, 2020.
– Participants in the call will submit their research (paper) and research ideas (poster), choosing one of the three scientific-cultural thematic areas to which they belong, using the digital platform https://www.conftool.net/sid2020/ where they must register and submit the required materials by July 31, 2020, at 11:59 PM.

Poster layout

For research projects, an anonymous abstract without references to the affiliated structures is required, consisting of a title, text of a maximum of 200 words, five keywords, and five bibliographic references.
For research ideas, a poster in vertical A1 format is required, for which the layout is provided with header and guidelines for its completion, as described below.

It can be freely created and formatted with texts and images (max 10 Mb), but must contain all the following information: title of the research idea, three keywords, name of the proposer (including date and place of birth), University/Organization of affiliation, position held by the proposer, scientific-cultural thematic area of reference (1. Connect / People, 2. Connect / Heritage, 3. Connect / Processes), names of the research group participants (including qualifications and Universities/Organizations of affiliation), description of the research idea (objectives, methods, expected results, conclusions, bibliographic references, contacts), estimated duration and budget.

For research projects, the abstracts will undergo a blind peer review selection process by at least two referees. The judgment may be: a) positive, b) negative.
All authors will receive the evaluation form with the judgment and reasons for the decision within the times specified in the call.
A second blind review process will concern the drafting of the full paper, whose parameters will be sent later.

For research ideas, the posters will be selected by a SID Scientific Committee and the judgment may be: a) positive, b) negative. All authors will receive the evaluation form with the judgment and reasons for the decision within the times specified in the call.
A second review process will concern the drafting of the full paper, whose parameters will be sent later.
The selected full papers and posters/full papers will be published in the SID conference proceedings, and in the case of an in-person Assembly, the posters selected for research ideas will also become the subject of an exhibition in Palermo.

Admission and Selection Criteria
– Consistency of the project or research idea with the chosen scientific-cultural thematic area
– Clarity and effectiveness of the proposed research methodology
– Originality and innovativeness of the project or research idea.

Presentation Methods
– The selected research projects or research ideas will be presented by their respective proposers at the conference that SID will organize in 2021, according to the methods that will be communicated in due time.

Scientific recognition for participants
– Participants selected in the first category will have their contribution published in the conference proceedings, a printed volume edited by SID.
– Participants selected in the second category, in addition to publication in the printed volume, will receive scientific recognition, SID RESEARCH AWARD 2020, which will be awarded to the best research ideas under 40.
– All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation.

SID RESEARCH AWARD
The SID RESEARCH AWARD is a scientific recognition established by SID, awarded annually during the national Assembly.
For the 2020 edition, a distinguished Jury will evaluate among the research ideas under 40 selected in the second category of the call, those considered most deserving.

The Jury
The Jury, which will be composed of the three discussants and the speaker of the introductory intervention (the President of SID), will meet at the end of the presentations and select among all the proposals those to which the recognition will be awarded. The Jury may also decide not to award any recognition.

Evaluation Criteria for the Assignment of the SID RESEARCH AWARD 2020
– Originality and innovativeness of the proposal (max 40 points)
– Adequacy of the methodologies and composition of the research team (max 20 points)
– Appropriateness of the budget (max 10 points)
– Quality and effectiveness of the presentation (max 30 points)
