At the CAMeC (Center of Modern and Contemporary Art) in La Spezia, the exhibition TEN MAGISTRAL YEARS was inaugurated last Friday, July 3rd, dedicated to the Tenth Anniversary of activities of the Master’s Degree in Naval and Nautical Design.
From 2005 to today, this course has graduated more than 200 students who have distinguished themselves in the workforce in top national positions in terms of post-graduation employment, with a job placement rate of nearly 90% in the naval and nautical sector.
The Master’s Degree in Naval and Nautical Design is an inter-university course led by the University of Genoa and the Polytechnic University of Milan.
The experiences of both universities contribute to training nautical designers capable of effectively managing technical issues by transforming them into functional and aesthetic solutions, qualifying one of the most renowned sectors of Made in Italy, namely DESIGN, and particularly Yacht DESIGN and beyond.
The course takes place at the University Campus of La Spezia, alongside the Nautical Engineering Courses (both undergraduate and graduate) and Mechanical Engineering.
The successes achieved by the NAVAL AND NAUTICAL DESIGN Course are attributed to the teaching spirit that combines theoretical knowledge with practical experiences, linking academic activities to company experiences, stimulating Italian training combined with international exposure, achieved through exchange and academic collaboration activities.
The number of enrollments is open but controlled and moderated, to meet the desire to satisfy without saturating the employment demand of the sector. The origin of the enrolled students covers the entire national area, with over 50% coming from outside the La Spezia territory, and now reflects an increasingly broad interest also on the international front.
At the exhibition’s inauguration, the Mayor of La Spezia, Massimo Federici, and the Military and civil authorities, the Rotary Club La Spezia, and a wonderful audience composed of students and alumni, doctoral candidates and enthusiasts, and sincere nautical enthusiasts were present, representing a qualifying and continuously developing economic sector in La Spezia in full green-economy spirit.
After the welcome address by Adm. Dino Nascetti, President of Promostudi, the course coordinator, Prof. Massimo Musio-Sale, introduced the course colleagues who, based on their respective expertise, illustrated the most significant moments that constituted the first passionate ten years of activity, with the aim of doubling the successes for the next ten, taking advantage of the infrastructural potentials that the Promostudi Foundation is preparing to make available through the creation of a new headquarters at the former Falcomatà military hospital, facing the north side of the Maritime Military Arsenal.
The exhibition showcases the best works produced by students within the Study Course, both as Laboratory projects and as Degree Theses, some of which have been awarded in national and international design competitions, such as the LEONARDO Prize recognized directly by the President of the Republic and consecutively obtained by students of the Course in 2011, 2012, and 2013.
These works, along with valuable study and project models, are visible in the first-floor room. On the ground floor, two real boats are displayed. The first is a sports dinghy designed and built by students under the guidance of Prof. Ratti and Prof. Sculli, named SPEZIALE, one of the three units that make up the Promostudi racing boat fleet for the 1001Vela Trophy for the University, which have achieved successes and excellent positions on multiple occasions.
The other boat, a traditional Ligurian gozzo to be restored, symbolizes the commitment to education for heritage culture, which is increasingly valued within the Course’s programs.
