Design and Research: Sources and Resources explores the connections, tensions, and opportunities that arise today at the intersection of research, design, and society. Starting from the theme proposed by the SID 2024 Annual Conference, the volume addresses the role of sources and resources as generative and driving elements of design research, understood simultaneously as the origin, support, and outcome of design processes.
The contemporary context—marked by environmental crises, technological transitions, social and cultural changes—calls for a critical reflection on the contribution of design in building regenerative, accessible, and collectively responsible visions.
Through the outcomes of the Sources and Resources Tables and Seminars, the volume provides a detailed mapping of research trajectories in the national landscape, bringing theoretical, methodological, pedagogical, and design perspectives into dialogue.
The collected contributions—from 25 university locations and selected through double-blind peer review—demonstrate the plurality and vitality of the design field: from sustainability practices and digital innovation to the social, educational, and cultural dimensions of design. The focus on sources and resources here is configured as a conceptual tool to critically rethink the foundations of design knowledge and to redefine, through dialogue and collaboration, the ever-evolving boundaries of design research.
