Proceedings of the National SID Conference “Design for Diversity” Pescara, June 12-13, 2023.
The contemporary globalized scenario presents unavoidable and pressing paradigms that must necessarily be addressed: the generalized aging of the population, the social and cultural melting pot, and global environmental issues necessitate overcoming certain prejudices, which represent the current limits of thought and development not only socially and culturally, but also economically.
In this context, the concept of diversity, which has always characterized human and natural contexts, appears central and strategic: from human diversity (physical, social, cultural) to biodiversity. Even contemporary cultural and political debate oscillates between those who consider it an element of extraordinary richness and those who see it as a weakness of the present, questioning whether it should be actively protected and pursued or forcibly opposed in the name of a more reassuring and regular uniformity.
However, the theme of diversity can also be interpreted from other perspectives: disciplinary multiplicity and interdisciplinarity, the plurality of relationships and activities, the systemic complexity of environments, products, and services.
Design, by its multiverse nature, positions itself as a potential agent to manage the complexity of the contemporary globalized scenario and thus diversity in its many forms. However, it needs to reflect on certain issues, such as the transversality of application fields, the interdependence of theoretical and instrumental frameworks, and the impacts of the results obtained or expected.
