There could not have been a better occasion to discuss design research than the temporal coincidence between the annual assembly of SID-Italian Society of Design and the centenary of the Bauhaus foundation. The decision to dedicate the Assembly to the School of Design, which was the first to reflect on design theory, its pedagogical and didactic models, and the project as the core of the discipline, allowed for a focal point around which to develop reflection on design research starting from an extraordinary legacy and, at the same time, from a vast distance. Without seeking improbable elements of pure continuity, which the Ulm School had already radically questioned in the post-war period, the Assembly became an opportunity to take stock of some issues already present at the Bauhaus, in very different forms and intensities, later enriched in subsequent experiences and re-elaborated by contemporary research.
An essential contribution to the renewal of the Bauhaus legacy came from Tomás Maldonado. Throughout his career as an educator and scholar, Maldonado often took a stand on the “Bauhaus tradition,” ever since he was tasked with initiating, not alone, the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm. Here, as is well known, he questioned the continuity with the Weimar School proposed by Max Bill, who was a co-founder and the first rector of Ulm. Claiming the right to develop a model suited to new times, Maldonado laid the foundations for an approach to design detached from tradition and characterized by the new theoretical and scientific disciplines that emerged in the post-war period. From this standpoint, Maldonado conducted a veritable campaign over time to elevate design to the level of university education, opening the discipline to the dimension of academic research.
