There could not have been a better occasion to discuss design research than the coincidence of the annual assembly of the SID (Italian Design Society) and the centenary of the founding of the Bauhaus. The decision to dedicate the Assembly to the School of Design—the first to reflect on design theory, its pedagogical and didactic models, and the project as the core of the discipline—provided a focal point for reflecting on design research, drawing from an extraordinary legacy while acknowledging the vast distance of time. Without seeking unlikely elements of pure continuity, which the Ulm School had already radically questioned in the post-war period, the Assembly became an opportunity to take stock of issues already present at the Bauhaus in various forms and intensities, later enriched by subsequent experiences and re-elaborated by contemporary research.

An essential contribution to the renewal of the Bauhaus legacy came from Tomás Maldonado. Throughout his career as an educator and scholar, Maldonado often took a stand on the “Bauhaus tradition,” starting from when he was tasked with co-founding the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm. Here, as is well known, he questioned the continuity with the Weimar School proposed by Max Bill, a co-founder and the first rector of Ulm. Asserting the right to develop a model suited to new times, Maldonado laid the foundations for an approach to design detached from tradition and characterized by the new theoretical and scientific disciplines that emerged in the post-war period. From this standpoint, Maldonado conducted a long-term campaign to elevate design to the level of university education, opening the discipline to the dimension of academic research.
